In Florida, sixteen new criminal human trafficking cases were filed in federal courts in 2021. Seven defendants were convicted. 79 percent (22) of new defendants were charged with sex trafficking, and 21 percent (6) were charged with forced labor. Florida federal courts ordered seven out of nine convicted criminal human trafficking defendants to pay restitution to their victim(s) in 2021. This is an increase from 2020, when four out of six convicted defendants were ordered to pay restitution.
