In West Virginia, three new criminal human trafficking cases were filed in federal courts in 2021. Four defendants were convicted. 100 percent (4) of new defendants were charged with sex trafficking, and zero percent (0) were charged with forced labor. Four defendants were excluded from resitution calculations because there were no identified victims in their cases, thus West Virginia federal courts ordered zero convicted criminal human trafficking defendants to pay restitution in 2021. Federal courts have never ordered a convicted West Virginia human trafficking defendant to pay restitution.
